Judie Tzuke

Wonderland
CASTLE COMMUNICATIONS ESSCD 184
On the strength of this album, Judie Tzuke's best days are over. Admitedly there are some saving graces, like the real passion on the unrequited love song, I Can Read Books; On A Ship (featuring Nigel Kennedy's fiddle) achieves an enhancing dreamlike quality and some Corinne Drewery style intonation on the jazzy Keep Control keeps you listening. For most of the time, though, the melodies aren't lively enough, the production lacks imagination and it's also debatable whether a voice as fragile as Tzuke's benefits from the electronic backing which dominates the album. Ultimaiely there's no toughness here, no real heart - just something so light and flimsy that the slightest gust of wind would blow it from your fingers. **
