JUDIE TZUKE

FOR REASONS best known to itself The Great British Music Press has it in for Judie Tzuke. Quite why I do not know... she must have done something awfully bad when she was small to deserve the almost universal distate she engenders amongst the critics. It is rare to find some fault in her style, appearance, manner, etc.,etc.
Apparently this rather baseless ill-feeling so upset Ms Tzuke that she seriously considered jacking it all in but, fortunately, decided against this somewhat drastic solution and set about writing a new album instead. For myself, having fallen in love with the woman after hearing 'Stay With Me Till Dawn', the more I've listened to her the more I've become enamoured of the passionate sincerity and sensitivity of her work.
There are doubtless many of you who would question the validity of Judie Tzuke's inclusion in Kerrang!, but I suspect that here I have the upper hand. I have seen Judie Tzuke perform live and can quite catergorically state that there is far more than the soft-focus commercial side of this lady. In her own quiet way she is an ardent rock'n'roller who warrants a better break than the 'GBMP' has seen fit to afford her.
But on with the album. Two tracks here, 'Face to Face' and 'Another Country', demonstrate this point with guitarist and co-writer Mike Paxman proving himself suitably adept at the heavier end of the fretboard spectrum. These tracks should sit quite comfortably in the live set alongside other 'heavies' like 'Black Furs' and 'Sports Car', which would raise a few Heavy Metal eyebrows given half the chance.
Personal favourite, however, is 'Walk, Don't Walk' on side two, an eerie desolate tale given a perfect, almost despairing texture texture by Paul Muggleton's production.
Undeniably one of the finest songs Judie Tzuke has penned.
Grasp this opportunity to share a little of the Tzuke magic... there's no time like the present.
