Judie Tzuke

Secret Agent
BIG MOON BM003

Nervy English songstress's third album on her own label, sold via growing Internet empire.

Seemingly ill-served by a number of record companies down the years, Judie Tzuke finally jumped ship in 1995 since when - with long-term collaborators Muggleton, Paxman and Noble - she's been releasing records under her own label and now sells them direct or over the Internet. As 1996's uneven Under The Angels demonstrated, total control isn't always a good thing, but here she's back in a rich vein of form with new songwriting partners and songs worthy of her distinctive and affecting voice. Dancing on Charcoal, Swallowing and Tonight (with it's fabulous first line melody) are deceptively simple, boppy synthesizer things, but there's a tougher edge at work too, especially the unpleasant Bully, while Mother tackles an emotionally difficult subject with grace and gravity. {Available via www.tzuke.com.
